The word "rare" comes up often when you deal with early comic book items.... From limited edition runs, to early issues...
To original art and everything in between. What you are looking at is one of the earliest, and now rarest comic book racks that exist. From the research i have done, there are less than 20 surviving original examples of this exact rack. If that's not rare... I don't know what is.
23.75x54.5x14 deep jigsawed wood and masonite three-tiered rack w/three shelves to each rack. Front of top rack features smaller logos in red/yellow w/additional text reading The Line Of Stars - The Best In Comics Reading. " Front of middle rack has text reading "All DC Comics Approved By Comics Code Authority. This is noteworthy as the Comics Code Authority was formed in Sept. 1954 in response to a widespread public concern over gory and horrific comic-book content. It allowed comic publishers to self-regulate the content of comic books in the US as an alternative to government regulation. This need arose from the the publication of Fredric Wertham's book "Seduction Of The Innocent" earlier in 1954 and the subsequent congressional hearings it brought about. This rack would work perfectly as a display for your vintage comics books, including easily accommodating newer CGC-graded examples. This is the photo example used in Chip Kidd's 2001 book "Collecting Batman" (on page 41).
Scattered wear, w/side bottoms having some warping/staining/cracks from moisture w/7/8x6" silver of wood surface missing on left and 1x1.5" and 1x7 pieces off of bottom right side. Fronts of rack show trace of wear but overall, rack still displays VF when viewed from front. Very rare and one of only a few known examples of this specific style rack.Identical to the collection of Chip Kidd, renowned author, graphic designer and pop culture enthusiast extraordinaire. I'll work with potential buyers to handle this in the best way possible for them...
Don't let it get away, collectors... In 10 years i have only seen one other for sale, and it wasn't this nice. The first photo is the actual rack with books as it sits, today.
